Has anyone had a problem with the bearing in the steering column coming loose? After BaP we found ours was loose so we pulled it all apart but didn’t find any problem so we figured we didn’t have things tight enough. After a couple testing days we found the bearing has started to work it’s way up the column and the snap ring is off again. Any thoughts, experiences like this?

Thank you,
Larry

sounds like a bad snap ring......

My bearing is sloppy and now with the damn quick release I can't fix it....

You are in luck,
I just rebuilt my full steering column.
I had to purchase a complete new steering column at the junk yard to make the car legal.
you can purchase a new bearing and plastic sleeve from Airhead Parts
Item# 50667, not cheap
$38 each
Cut the wire off and you are good to go!!!!
LOL - you have a welded on quick release , bummer no fixy with out welder.
You want to know how to fix it with a legal quick release.
This is what I did,
install steering column complete with out the outer protection tube.
Mark the steering rode halfway or 1/3 from the bracket or collapse cage.
Dissassemble.
Cut steering rode at a 22 degrees angle,
install your new bearings, yes two of them, that way when you loose the next set of bearings you do not have to do this again.
Leave spare bearing low out of the way.
Now fabricate a 10" tube sleeve that will slip over your steering rod.
Drill 4 holes 3 inches apart at 90 degrees of each other(two for each rod end)
Slip the sleeve half way over the first half of the steering rod and tack it.
Then slip the other end of the steering rod into the other half of the sleeve. Twist the rod until it sinks all the way in with the 22 degree angle. Tack it.
Now fill in the sleeve holes with weld with good penitration and weld each sleeve end to the steering rode.
The holes will give you connection throughout the sleeve as well as the two ends.
Paint then install back into the car.
Done.

elburro,
Always keep the collapsing portion of the steering column.
The collapsing portion is the part that will save your life when you cannot see and you drive off a 10 ft deep cross grain washout and 15 feet on the other side you hit the vertical wall at 20 mph, - true and tested. FRT in the 90's gave you a 500ft wide path to go through the cross grain, the same courses he ran the District - 38 motorcycle races, there are alot of these cross ditches in Plaster City.

Everything is stock on the steering column.
The area above your knees is where you make the 22 degree cut, sleeve and reweld. Weld on each end of the sleeve and in the holes of the sleeve. You do not drill holes in the steering column.Only have holes in the outer sleeve for more weld penetrations.
If I knew how to install the picture like how green booger does on this site I will past it on this post.

Green Booger, how do you post the pictures to show up right here instead of down in the attachment box below.

Chuck:

What you use is a code called BB code. You will also need the web address (URL) to post the photo. Take this code:

[img][/img]

And post your picture URL in between the ] and [ of the IMG tag. So it would look like this:

[img]http://www.twolarrysracing.com/images/MoreCowbell.gif[/img]

And that should do it. Let me know if you need help.

And hopefully when I post this, it is correct because sometimes this board can be a bit off. ;)
