Hey all,
I finally got around to reading my July 19 issue of AutoWeek and there's an article laying out the costs of racing various series. In case spouses are grousing about the money you're dropping into your car, this will put it in perspective. Forumula One $250 million to field two cars. Top teams (McLaren, Ferrari) spend upward of $500 million. Also you're looking at employing 800-1,200 people. So that explains a lot. NASCAR Sprint Cup $8 million per car. Top teams spend $22 million to $25 million. Cheap at twice the price! Indy Racing League $5 million table stakes, but if you want to roll with the big dogs, budget $10 million per car. NHRA Top Fuel or Happy Car $3 million gets you in the gate. Plan on $4-$5 million if you want to win a race or two. I'm bummed they don't have numbers for racing the full SCORE series in a Trophy Truck, but I'd bet it's on the order $2-$3 million if you've got a semi hauler, enough spare parts to build a replacement vehicle, race shop, plus two or three purpose-build chase trucks. Tequila and bail money, extra. |

Dirt is for racing. Asphalt is just for getting there.
