Hey guys I had a guy back out of some link pin spindles I made just for him and need them gone. Take a look in the classifieds if interested. Thanks

Hi Doug,

Is it true that you can't beef up the link pin carrier but you can gusset the tie rod end? I thought that is the reason the ball joint front end is stronger.

Very true about not being able to re enforce link carriers, nowhere in the book does it say you can,and there is 0 mentioned on the Score website for teck additions but the spindle arm can be. The spindle end its self is the week link on a linkpin. unless they cheat and put a bigger spindle end that a ball joint cant do because of the drum. Early Write place stock link pin spindles had combo size spindle ends put on them for 5/1600 cars when 5/1600 had to run stock Vw spindles that most would not know if a link car in class 11 had them unless they knew what to look for. There were about 10.000 of those spindles made by Write Place. It would look a little obvios if a 66-67 had a early model drum up front on a ball joint front end and 4 lug would be out of luck because the drum cant take a larger berring on the outside like a link pin drum can.

I do remember the Wright Place beefed spindles I think they were similar to the 356 Porsche spindles.

FYI:
The beefed link pin spindles were not intended for 5-16 cars. They were around and I owned a set long before 5-16 class came into being. They are a developmental step beyond the stock linkpin spindle and link. They were THE SHIZZ for Class 1, 2 and 5 back in the day before Cecil Wright stepped things up a notch when he invented the Combo Link spindle assembly. The beefed spindles were allowed when the 5-16 class was started. Several years later, they were allowed to step up to Combos.

sorry, incorrect, Beefed spindles were not allowed on 5/1600 untill the 2nd race of the 1979 season at Mexicalli as well as another shock on the back and certainly not allowed at the Baja 500 of 1977 when the class first raced. That was not even open for discussion. I went threw every meeting for the development of 5/1600 between the class 11 racers that wanted it verce the 11 racers that didnt. Over 100 people took part in those meetings-discussions All 5/1600 was in 1977-78 and early 79 was a class 11 baja bug, with 1600 motors and stock transmissions that is all that could be agreed to. The meetings with Dan Smith who really pushed the 5/1600 concept along with Mike Menco M Van Ells as well as Rober Sharbarth among others who wanted 11 left alone and unchanged got very heated to say the least. Oh by the way, Mickey Thompson did not win the 1975 riverside in class 11, Johnny Johnson won the main event on Saturday night. Mickey won practice on Friday night I believe but was a DNF in the main breaking a BAlljoint if memorie serves me rite as well as a flat or 2 after building a big lead. My dad and I got 4th. There was a lot of big names in that first race for the working mans class as it was called, I seam to remember Mickey having 4-5 cars for some big names to drive, Johnny Johnson being one of them. Welcome to the class 11 site

Good memory Dave. I was thinking of the Class 5-16 as starting in 79...Oops
Mickey won the 1st Class 11 \"race\" - but not the main event for the class that weekend. I never heard how the couple got back home with that car so badly beaten. At least one front fender at each end were flopping loose and the bumpers trashed. I expect there was a lot more damage too. They were thrilled that it won, but not happy about the condition it was in afterwards. Now that we've jacked the heck out of this thread...let's let it get back to the regular programming...
