The oil cooler I was planning on using seems to have some pretty small inlets and outlets (looks like it was really designed to be a tranny cooler) Is it fool hardy to attempt to use it? Or should I upgrade the cooler ro one that has at least 3/8\" lines going to and away from it?

1/2 is correct, any smaller you are begging for trouble. Just go buy the cheap bugpack cooler, they work great

I'd do the bugpack one, but I am feeding my spare tire through the rear window.. That will kill the BP cooler.

Mount it outside of the car either on the roof above the rear window or over the vents just below the window,

On the roof would be cake. it'd suck if I rolled, but I'll have much headaches at that poitn anyway ;)
