I've seen both over the years and can't decide which to do on the new car. Should I run the little wings off the skid plate to protect the pushrod tubes or should I use those covers that go on the exhaust studs. Anyone have issues with either type of think of a disadvantage of either.

You mean the kind that go on the exhaust studs? What won't they clear? I had to trim our last ones to fit the narrowed engine but that's it. I just thought a skid mounted one would be nice and it seems like they might mess up the airflow of the cooling air.

We reun the ones that bolt to the exhaust studs and have never had an issue. We also run J tubes. Be a baller and run both!!

That is weird, I thought I had tried it and it didnt fit. I will try it again. If it works you tought a old dog a new trick. I clearly remember my J tube hitting. But hay if it works great

It is a tight fit but ours does fit. Our J tubes might not be the straightest things in the world.

I guess if you run that style pushrod tube protector then the spring loaded tubes are not a benefit since you couldn't get to them in a hurry unless you remove the exhaust system and remove the protector. That's my only other concern. I was thinking of running spring loaded tubes and I'm not going to waste the money if they lose their benefit.

Mike,

Those spring loaded tubes leak like a son of a gun. Your best bet is stock VW units. Spring loaded versions are good in an emergency so you don't have to loosen the head.

Why not the windage tubes?

Good point, I'll just keep some of those in case I need to replace a pushrod in a spares box somewhere. That's a good use for those. I'm just looking at 1600's too much and what Major's is putting out and going by that maybe too much.
