How picky are tech inspectors about the wall thickness of the main bars of a cage? The rules require 1.5 x .095 wall – Chirco lists their cage kits at .090 wall. I know .005 is a very small difference. But would a Chirco based cage have a problem passing tech? The thought here is to get the main portion of the cage as a kit and add to it. I’m sure we would be saving some time and possibly a few bucks. We would probably be running SNORE mostly but one of our long range goals is to do the Baja 1k.

I know buying a built car (or existing project) is the way to go but there doesn’t seem to be much out there.

Thanks,
L

The .005 wont be a difference. However, You will see a difference in the fact that the Chirco cages are made out of ERW mild steel tubing. Not DOM steel or Chromoly.

There is a big argument on SNORE's checkpoint about cages. What it boils down to is that as it stands, next year, according to the rules, your cage will have to be made out of 1020 DOM or Chromoly.

Will SNORE ever check your cage? I don't know. But I built mine out of Dom because I'd rather be safe than sorry..

I am an ARTS Tech inspector.

The tubing is nominally .095. The allowance is +/- .005\". Chirco chooses to advertise their cage as made of .090 for some reason, which is probably that many people round the number off. The tubing and wall thickness are fine. I have no issue with my son considering using an EMPI cage like what Chirco sells in his own Baja.
(My son was a co-driver in the 5-1600 winning AGS Racing Baja at the MORE Kartek Shootout Saturday and worked Tech with me.)

You may have rules issues, but probably NOT Tech inspector issues with SNORE. For SCORE, the rules say no, but...

Snore tech as of yesterday said no problem and it will continue to be no problem for class 11 or 5/1600,
