TOPIC: Roof hatch???
Roof hatch??? 1 year, 11 months ago #12089

Technically, a roof hatch is not allowed by the rules but it would be a nice safety feature for a quick escape route in the event of a rollover. Although you might get away with a roof hatch if your bug was originally equipped with a sunroof or a rag top. Anyone know if allowing roof hatches for all bugs has ever been discussed with the all powerful gods of the rulebook?

I may be a little off base but I cant think of a situation that would block both doors and the front windshield.

Unfortunately, I've been in one of those situation. I was the driver during a very bad roll. My navigator was knocked out and blocking the only exit. I'm not trying to press this issue, just asking the question. Don't really understand why a roof hatch would not be allowed since it improves safety and does not affect performance or reliability.

It was a 1600 car. If the Class 11 has windows, then the only escape routes are the two side doors.

Dont run a windshield if it is a big concern.
I do see where you are coming from, I co-drive in a class 9 car that does not allow my fat a** out of the sides or front very easily, I just cant see ever needing a fourth exit point on a steel body car. |

They will never let you cut a big piece of the roof out to make a so called hatch. As the rule book states you cant modify the body anyway and for certain if you roll a vw over its roof you have lost any chance of a so called hatch working. There are so many ways out of a Vw even if it has windows, one kick and the sides-front or back window will come rite out except for the windshield in one piece with out breaking
