Roberto,
Welcome to the Class 11 Coalition, the answer to you question on material is: 1 1/2\" cromoly tubing, .090 & .125 wall thickness. You can check our web site as we have many pics of the build of our cage. |

I know most people build a class 11 using 1.5\" x 0.095\" wall tubing but is that correct? Does the car come in under 2000 lbs? That's what the rulebook says.

125 wall thickness is not a requirement, 095 is all you need. If you are not going to race Score, put mild steel in it, 095 1.5, or if you plan to race a Score event and dont think you can get by with mild steel, put DOM in it. I am very against chromoly inside a VW where you cannot see it. I have cut roofs off of chromoly cars to put a new roof and found spidercracks all over the top of the tubing, so instead of putting the roof on, I had to junk it. Mild steel or DOM will not do that. 99 percent of the class 11 cars running have mild steel and have run that way for over 33 years. If you plan to race Code or record, Snore, More or MDR by all means put the mild steel, it is way cheaper and works just fine. I used it to build my new car that will be raced anywhere except Score because I wont race with them again, and it is no problem to get it passed anyway. If you put the cage in and the workmanship is good, and you use the required thickness where it is required with all the gussets you would have no problem passing it, with all the required tubes and thicknesses Score would never turn you or your 250 dollar inspection Fee away or not let you race. Like I stated before, chromoly I do not trust where you cannot see it, it is stronger in some ways, and weaker in other ways. Good luck

I know, but if they stuck to that the class would be gutted in all series, as well as 5/1600 and others. I know only a small handfull of cars are actually chromo or DOM, at least 98 percent of all class 11 cars racing are seamed mild steel. The last thing Score Snore More Code Record are going to do is turn cars away with material that has run in race cars for almost 40 years. Like I stated, if the workmanship is good it is no problem. Besides, my car was started 15 years ago and stopped till this year. The main thing they dont want is heavy trucks with 1.5 tubing like trophy trucks, which there are a few of those, and the wrong thickness being run. It is what it is, Score still passes mild steel all the time because they dont want to lose anybody
