What type and location is the best for the air cleaner. What do you use for the hose/pipe from the air cleaner to the engine?

Cameron uses an industrial, forklift type air filter assembly, I believe he can provide you with the particulars on that. Another option, which can be costly, is the UMP plenum box, which sits on top of the carb and then into the large diameter air box. Either route you go most of the shops carry the 3" rubber fitting in various degrees to get you plumbed up. For straight sections most people utilize 3" aluminum tubing. From the plenum box to carb is just a short piece of hose that can be found at just about any local auto parts store, just get something that is pretty sturdy. You don't want anything that is too pliable.

Post edited by: NYClass11Racer, at: 2006/08/20 12:00

Yeah, two options for an air filter. Many guys run the UMP 3" Air Filter which runs about $210 from McKenzies (just bought one).
Another route for an industrial sized air cleaner like the UMP is a larger 3" element from a fork-lift of industrial gas powered tractor. Check a fork-lift repair store for something of the sort. Oftentimes, they'll have airfilters like ours lying around. Replacement filters are easily found and they weigh about the same as the UMP model. |

I landed a sweet Kubota filter off Ebay for 1111 it cost <$40 shipped to my door. It has a sweet switch on it if you want to run some type of "clean your air filter" lamp on your dash.

Yeah. it has a vacuum switch included to wire for a warning light that would tell you your intake has been restricted a bit. We were surprised that the 1584cc will suck through that 3" intake hole pretty hard.
Hey 11:1 compression, cammed out 1600s are cool. |

Michael for that Kubota filter you guys used on the bug, what type of box did you use to house it. Any other parts to the setup and about what did it all run? thanks

Look up Baldwin part number pa2805. Great filter with a huge paper filter element that has a plastic outter shell. We run this filter on our car for a couple of races before we throw the whole thing away and buy another for like $30. We also use the UMP airbox with the velovity stack.

I am putting together a Baja bug and have not done the filter system yet but I will be doing something similar to what I devised for my Honda Pilot 12.227.214.171/prefilter3.htm
IMO no matter what filter system you use or how good the filter might be a pre filter is the only way to go, let the pre filter take the bulk load of the dirt. Since I have more room to deal with on the bug my pre filter will have way more surface area so I can go longer between changes. I will probably go with a K&N filter for the pre filter since they are the fastest and easiest to clean, right now the main filter, the one closest to the carb will be a UNI foam filter oiled with Maxima foam filter treatment (FFT) Any reasons not to go this route? While were on the subject what would be the minimum hose size to use between the pre filter and main filter boxes I will be running a dual port 1600cc single carb. Thanks in advance. |
