tough question to answer, you should go over everything, twice. A 50 cent blot could ruin your day.

make sure your ball joints are tight and double nutted, make sure all engine tin and rubber seals are in place. Make sure the ditributer is timed right at 30 total advance and tight. Rear axel nuts are tight with coter keys, all suspension bolt tight Make sure your your skid plates are on right. Make sure your air cleaner is clean and all hoses tight with hose clamps. make sure you are getting full throttle, if not adjust the throttle cable, make shure the hook on the pedal assembly for the clutch cable is good, after you run it for a little while make sure the fan belt is still tight. a lot of times after first putting it on they will loosing up. I carry 10 extra fan belts in my car every race. make sure thee shifter is tight and adjusted right. make sure you have an extra cap and roter in the car YES they break. cotter keys in your seat belts, sterring wheel tight. air pressure in tire about 28 to 30psi if you use yokohama 700 15 tires Ma ke sure your spare tire is in the car reaaly tight so it cant move and wipe out other things on your car. Same for the jack. Remember to put a braker bar with 3/4 socket for changing a flat. make sure your sterring box is shimmnd and the pitman arm welded on. These are all things that a lot of people take for granted or forget good luck in your first race----Dave-co

Post edited by: DaveCo11, at: 2007/09/20 07:25

Whats a good method to adjust the shifter? We seem to have a little overlap with 2nd and reverse.

Chris, sounds like one or all three items may be bad or worn. Reverse lockout plate, shift rod bushing (in the tunnel) or the shift coupler. Make sure all three are new and adjustment should be easy. What works for me is just before you tighten the shifter down (still sloppy) I put it in reverse, hold the shifter there with one hand and tighten the two bolts with the other. Minor adjustments may have to be made from there to suit your style. That is with a stock VW shifter of course. All aftermarket shifters are junk in my opinion. The only exception being a shifter from Gene Berg. Is that the new look of your car? Looks nice since I last saw it.

Hey CHip,

I'll give that a try, thanks for the tip. Yeah I recently had the car painted and am now beginning to test it. Had a good session out in Barstow last weekend. Maybe we can race the next MORE race...we'll see how things progress. Here's a pic of the car now.

Those are some fine looking shaved maxxis bighorns.....Car looks good. Did you end up going with the type 2 cv's? Is that tube going to your air cleaner above your spare tire mounted in the rear?

Brenner thanks again for the hook-up on the parts and tires...tires are working out bitchin'. Yeah we run type two stock CV's. I cleaned them up a bit to get rid of the sharp edges...and yeah the tube from our monster sized AFE air box goes to the carb via the UMP.

Also , read you're building another car, good luck/have fun.
