Is there any reason NOT to run a spool?? They seem pretty reasonable cost wise and the traction through silt would be a benefit.

I have heard that it puts bigger loads on everything else in the tranny ie; Ring&Pinion and spiders. Limited slip would work better but co$t may be an issue. If you do try the spool let the rest of us know how it works..

If you do try the spool let the rest of us know how it Spools dont have spider gears, the only drawback I see is it is extremely hard on cv joints, the other upside is when you break a vc joint, one wheel still pushes, possibly enough to get you to a faster place to change an axle. Also when they check your gear ratios they will have to have both wheels of the ground and a different degree wheel works.. |

So it is not harder on the internals?

To a point, but not substantial. If you look at it larger tires are extremely harder on the trans, but I don't see any one running 165 tires

Exactly, How can the pinion know how many tires are on the ground.
Added traction is a really nice thing when climbing hills. Plus, it'll kick the rear end out in corners and you can play \"drift wars\" |

Picked up a drag spool. I probably won't have it in by BAP, but it should be in by Caliente :D
We shall see what breaks first.. |

I don't think that a spool is legal for class 11. Transmission has to be as delivered to the US. VW never to my knowledge sold a locker trans. They did deliver a few limited slip models so they would be legal.

[bold]\"SCR25 Transmission Type 1 bug 4 speed transaxle only. Heavy duty side plate and differential allowed. 8.33 (4.12) ring and pinion only. Stock VW 1\"t, 2n , 3rd , 4th gears only, no close ratio gears allowed. Axle over tubes are not allowed. Other intemal modifications are optional. Rear transaxle mounts may be supported by a maximum of two vertical straps of .025\" x \"I\" dimension. Adjustable straps are optional. Any gearshift lever allowed. Shift tube must be inside tunnel. Any type 1,2 or181 stub axle and any VW cv joint Oversize bolts ok.\"[/bold] Where does it say \"as delivered to the us\"? Isn't a spool just a \"heavy duty differential\" ?? Obviously I am not trying to be illegal here. If I was, I certianly would not post it on an open forum. ;) |

Mace,
Well, good question. I think that a heavy duty reference means the same parts but stronger. The locker would or would not have spider gears? Without, would not really be the intent of the rules. Figure a way to stick two in the thing and I'm with you, legal. Ask SNORE tech or Bill Savage for a definite ruling. If you find a limited slip for sale please let me know. I would love to try that.
