Anyone know how to swap the T-1 drive flanges to T-2 on the IRS transmission? I want to put T-2 flanges on an unbuilt trans for mock-up. I heard you pull up a seal and there is a snap ring under there? Is that it?

Yes, that is it. Go to a motorcycle shop and get a tube of \"Triple Bond \"gray sealer. Use it when reinstalling the flange seals. They will never leak.
Remember when using the Type 2, 181 or 944 CV's that the axles need to be the shorter version in most setups. Blindchickenracing.com has a run down of all the different CV's and axles.
The cheapest place we found the type II set up was at the porsche wrecking yard. $150.00 for the early 944 parts, two axles, cvs, and stub axles. Same part numbers as VW van, 181 Thing. Got to love those german engineers.

Thanks much. That's easy. I thought for axles you measure the inside of the drive flange cup to the inside of the stub cup at their closest point, which should be exactly level with each other and then subtract 1/2\" and that's your axle length? That dimension should not be changing in this setup since the arms and transmission are the same width.

I was thinking that you'll probably need custom axles with longer splines since the CV stars a a bit closer together and I don't want that shoulder on the stock type 1 axle hitting the CV star and causing binding. Thoughts?

There might be a spacer behind the flange, just be aware if it happens to come out, some have them some don't. Other than that, just pry the seal out and take off the snap ring.

mike are you building another car??

Let me squash that rumor right now...... I don't have a car, just thinking about things outloud, all help is appreciated, I have never done anything to the trans other than put synthetic gear oil in it and adjusted the clutch cable.

There will be a new project coming along in the near future.

Yes, there is a spacer behind the flange on the IRS trans. it looks like a old snap ring.
As far as axle length goes, if you take your old type 1 axle assembly stub axle to drive flange and put it next to a Thing, 944, or bus axle asembly they are the same length. The 181,944 and bus CVs are wider that the type 1, hence the shorter drive axles. At least that is what we found doing our setup.

Sounds good then. Do you remember what length you guys used and which brand? SAW or some EMPI/other brand?

We used the stock 944 Porsche axles, they have the same markings as the 181 /Thing axles that I had left from my Thing days. I did not have a stock type 2 axle to compare with, but assume that they are the same.
IMO, the stock axles are fine. If I didn't brake on on my wifes 944 our little 1600cc motor should not tax them too much.

I'm using thing flanges and Porsche 924 stub axles along with the 924 axles. Should I still use the axle clips??? Thanx, Ol' John
