How do they do these? I was thinking on a lathe but what do you attach the cv body to? I'm trying to get a friend who has access to a machine shop to do some for me but I don't know enough to tell him how to do it, he doesn't have too much experience either....

Those look like a very poor idea to me. The text even describes them as what not to get (although that seems to be more of a bearing issue thing than anything else..

If you are running Type 2 CV's then I would feel better about it, but type ones cannot be strong enough when that much material is removed..

BTW, to answer your question, chock it up in a lathe and start turning them down, leave the edge on the outside and then flip it in the lathe and do the other edge. Pretty simple actually.

I would also pull the star and balls during the process.

It seems to me that the weight reduction would not be worth the loss of strength.

Mike,

The better way to lighten cv joints is to cut cooiling fins into them. This leaves more material for strength but still gives you the benefit of a lighter cv joint and better cooling.

Break one on the turns out of Mikes Sky Ranch and you will wish it had been a stronger joint with more of the metal.

Are you the one that always breaks the transmissions in the 500?
