Good Morning,

I am still searching for a car. Do I need the car to be titled for any reason? I have seen a couple that looked like solid candidates but with no titles. I have several titles from cars long gone but no pans to go with them.

Thanks.

I'm not an expert (though I play on on Class 11 Coalition). It's my understanding that for a good number of races, you need at least a green sticker (as we call it in California) that allows you to take the car off road.

Our car started out as an engine-less, transmission-less shell on wheels with no paperwork. One of our teammates was able to secure us a new title through DMV, but it required having the VIN and information on the history of the car, engine and transmission.

Bottom line is you can probably get any vehicle titled. It's just a question of what paperwork you have to start with.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

I dont have one for mine and in all my racing carrer it has not been a issue, if you find a car dont worry about it, it is most likly out of the DMV system anyway and a bill of sale will work fine

DaveCo,
You're correct that, after something like five years, a car disappears out of the DMV system. However if you want to drive it on BLM land, I believe that at least a green sticker is required.

Granted you might not get caught, but I'm laboring under the impression that law enforcement could even cite you if you were trailering the car someplace and didn't have it stickered.

Again, this is rough speculation. Your facts may vary.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen,

I guess I was kind of wondering about being south of the border and not being able to get the car home 'cuz I didn't have papers or something silly like that.

I hadn't thought of the CA events and their regs.

I found one guy with a pair of 69's, but only one title. The titled pan has been beat real bad but maybe I could just cut the Ser. # out of the bad pan and put it in the good car. I've got a title for a '70 that I scrapped years ago, but I didn't have the presents of mind at the time to cut the number out before the scrap went away. I thought I was done with aircooled, but they are like a disease that goes dormant for a while and just keeps coming back!!!

Thanks again for the insight.

FYI cutting out the vin# and welding it to another is very illegal. Back in the 70s and 80s when bugs were very common and popular, thives would steal bugs and simply swap out the vin# and re-register the car in their name. If the pan is in poor shape, replace the pan halfs and rienforce where needed. For an 11 you are going to weld up all the seems from the frame horns to the bulkhead anyway. As far as the non-papered car, just run the vin# with DMV and as long as it isn't stolen, getting a title would be a piece of cake. My car isn't registered but I do have the title and plates in hand. Hope this helps.

If the car is not stolen, I can get valid WA title. Takes a couple months. All legal and on the up and up. Mechanics Lien...

Also you might ask your local License agency about a Three year registration. Basically you get a three year registration, during which time the previous owner can make a claim on the car. I don't know what happens if they make a claim, it has never happened to me. After three years you get a title.

My pan and body don't have the same vin. The fuel cell goes on top of the pan vin. Body has vin in two easily seen locations. 69 pan under a 70 body.

If you need help call me.

I see your avatar is a plane, Do you fly?

Hey Chip,

Thanks for the reality check, I guess I was stepping over the line a bit. I was rationalizing it as \"no harm no foul\" kind of like the 55 mph speed limit. It would be kind of hard to drive the car while a guest of state. A couple of years ago I vowed to mend my \"get 'er done\" ways and \"color inside the lines\" as much as possible, thank you for inadvertantly helping me to keep that promise to myself.

NWGuy,

I had completely forgotten about the Mech. lien route. I even had a shop for a few years but never had to take anybodies car. Probably a couple that I should have but just wrote it off as bad judgement of character on my part and moved on.

Yes I do fly, that is a picture of my Midget Mustang at Reno Air Races in '04.

Have a great day gentlemen.
