So we got this free bug... 8 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
and I plan to build an 11 car out of it. The local police comm center told me yesterday that it was not listed as stolen based on the VIN I pulled off the plate attached to the dashboard. The driver door frame has a 08/69 stippled into the jam and the cops told me it was listed as a 1970. Is the 08/69 the month and year it was built?

And I attached a photo of this beast. It needs a few things replaced but I'm actually stoked that besides a little surface rust she seems to be pretty darn clean.

Can someone tell me how much I can replace and still remain "stock"? I want to replace the front clip with a new one since it looks as if she was backed into or bumped another car at some point.

Also, it has a sunroof. Do any of you class 11 guys have sunroof cars? If so, how do you handle that? Remove it and leave it open? Close it and leave it closed? Actually use it a sunroof?

Thanks!

You have to put sheetmetal over the hole and weld it up for the sunroof.

Any idea on replacing parts? It doesn't have fenders and I want to replace the front clip...

Is that still race legal?

Thanks,

Oh, and my photo is too large, I have to resize it later and I will post it when I get that done. Sorry guys.

You're allowed to replace parts in order to make it the same as stock. So replacing a front apron due to a collision is not a problem. Doing it to change the body is a problem. You can't do fiberglass or modify the fenders in a way outside what you would do if you had a prestine stock bug to work with. Restoring it and then modifying that is acceptable.

IIRC, you can just bolt the sunroof closed. That is what I am doing.

So I resized the photo of our "car". I stripped the doors today and hosed them off. I'll pick up the rest of her tomorrow evening and start in on the process (which appears it will be a lengthy one).

Does anyone know of some good step-by-step instruction to remove the body from the floorpans? I'm a total newb and would love to not have to spend hours figuring it out!

Thanks!

I think that you would be better off with used fenders than anything from mid-america motorworks. They're a bit pricey. A bit of research will save you some more money. I'm jealous. Free and not all rusty. Good luck.

Just remove the following bolts:

Under the gas tank on top of the beam (2)

Under the car; about 18 with big washers and 4 larger bolts at the front of the car.

Inside the car are the 4 or 6 just below the rear seat, with big funky washers like from around the edge of the pan on the bottom.

body mount bolts inside the rear fender wells. One on each side.

Remember to disconnect the steering column as well.

Pedals can stay, and it's a lot easier to take the body off with the motor fan shroud out of the way. I would just take the engine/trans out now anyway...

Then, get a jack and break the seal by jacking the car off the pan on one side then the other.

Then just get 4 guys and using straps, hands, long 2x4s (preferred) just lift the body off. It's very easy to work on the suspension/pan without the body shell in the way.
