I am laying out my dash and considering my options. Idiot lights for oil and alt are a given. I also want an oil pressure gauge and volt gauge. What about oil temp or head temp ?

We put in idiot lights for the oil temp, pressure and Alternator excite light. We also ran both oil pressure and temp gauges. It is really hard to keep an eye on everything and the road ahead and mirror to the rear for the co driver.

I would keep it as simple as possible. In fact we are going to change the small alternator light to match the oil temp and pressure 2\" clearance lights and paint the top of the lights black or shroud them from the sun to make it easier to see if a problem happens.

Also, it may be a good idea to put a buzzer to get your attention if you csn't keep a lookout for the light. Just an idea. Ol' John

A couple of the radio/intercomm suppliers have a warning buzzer devise that interconnects to the intercom for an alert.

who wants to look at gauges?? you mite be afraid of what you see when they get hot LOL 2 big lites is all ya need, anything more is a complete waste of money. Sorry to the guys that have them but the guys that I know that have put in a lot of gauges find themselfs worring and slowing down because of what the gauge says and from my experionce if the lites not on, go for it. And another thing, you would be very suprised at how little you or your rider would really look at the gauges. A big colord lite gets your attention rite away and tells the same story. If the belts off the lite comes on, if the alternator isnt working, the lite comes on. If its low on oil the lite will start flickering. enough said----Dave-co

I would think you would also want an oil temp gauge though. Then at least you know if you are running hot or not. True you will probably be running hot most of the time, but it would still be nice to know if you are running hotter than normal.

in my opinion I dont even want to know. You would know if the motor is running to hot before you would even think to look at the gauge and like I said if it is really hot I dont want to know because it will probebly make it anyway and if you did keep looking at the gauge amd started to worry and slow down you would loose time and again if there is a problem your lights are going to tell you anyway if their is a problem so why carry it---Dave-co

I like Daveco's theory on this...basically keep it simple and pay attention to the car/engine feel. Another long-time racer told me the same thing...idiot lights work fine. I haven't laid my dash out yet but you bet I'll throw an ol' speedo in there to see how fast we're going!
