Wow, 235's on a Stock rim look to cause all sorts of problems..
Front looks to limit steering, is this a big deal, or do you just turn the crap out of your front steering stops?

Hook limiters? upper shock mount,

Rear shock placement (not really a huge deal but)

I moved the 4th bolt to the other side of the spring plate. There was a VERY small amount of clearance between the tire and the head of the bolt.

Mace,
I just looked at our car. The front hook stop pic looks about right. We have more clearance to the shock tower by over an inch at the same angle you have shown. In the pic with the rear spring plate we have at least 1.5\" of clearance from the tire to the spring plate.
We run the BFG 235's at 28 PSI and have not had problems.
Could you have different than stock bug rims? Maybe vanagon rims?
Jeff

Just checked the rim offset. It is just shy of 4\" from edge of rim to center mounting surface. Hope that helps.

Take the hook stops and bend/angle them in (towards the beam) using a heavy sledge hammer for more clearance. You definitely don't want the hooks rubbing on the sidewall or you'll have a flat in no time. On our car we also adjusted the stock steering limiter that stops the pitman arm travel just before the tire kisses the hook. You also want to look at the inner wheel well where the body meets the pan and hammer that edge flat as well to keep the tires from getting cut there as well. We don't run 235s but it also looks to me that the rim has the wrong offset. Fully cycle your suspension with the tires straight and turned and see where the contact points are. Do the rear as well.

It just occurred to me that I can adjust the camber on the upper BJ to move the top of the tire out a bit. Shoudl have thought of that before...

I think the rims are actually Giha rims, but the chrome Bug rims that I have measure almost the same BS. The ones I mounted have ~4.120 Clearance, and my chrome ones have ~ 4\" Incidentally, it also looks like I have 2 5\" wide chrome rims as well. On all of the ugly rims I have, the hubcap mounting ring sticks out further than the outer rim. On two of the chrome rims I have, the hubcap mounting rim does not stick out past the outer edge of the rim.

You don't want to adjust the eccentric nut to achieve more clearance as this will give the car too much positive camber and affect the handling. There is a notch on the eccentric that should be facing forward (front of the car) when you lock down the upper balljoint. This will put the caster in the neutral position. Some people even weld the eccentric to the spindle (no more adjusting). Don' quote me on wheel offset configurations but I do know that VW had made many different widths and offsets for many different applications. More so on the 4 lug wheel. See if you can borrow a wheel/tire from another fellow 11er there in Vegas and compare the two.

The chrome Vw 4 lug wheels are 4.5 and some are 5.5 forsure a minumum of 4.5. You forsure need to move the accentric to get the tire away from the shock tower, in fact you might have bent arms to have it that close to the shock tower. There is something not rite to have the tire sitting inside the shock tower. You would almost be better off removing the top hook stop, you will find you will never use all the front end travel the car is cappable of having, the tire will stop it way way before you bottom the ball joint out. That looks like a flat waiting for a place to happen

Hey Mace,

I may be wrong but I believe the rule book states the stock bug 4\" rim must be used. That should take care of your clearance problem.

These should be Stock 4\" rims, and you are right, that is exactly how the rules read.
