Find a running Vw and yes you can build one to race the Baja 1000 for 5 grand or under. You do not need the latest and greatest to compete in Baja. If anyone on this site had any idea how stock class 11 use to be and the average speeds we use to run with 100 percent bone stock motors all the way to the vacume advance distributers to stock seats in a lot of them to non resivor shocks and have a gigantic finishing record. Take it from me, if you want to race Baja start with a running complete Vw, you have most of your race car. A set of Torsion bars for the rear, set of shocks-nets-belts and build the cage yourself you can forsure do it. In Baja it is not about HP or compression in the motor. You could run the stock motor on pump gas with 7.5 to one like class 11 had to do for years,we could do nothing what so ever to the engine, it had to be exactly like came in the car you raced brand new, it would be extreamly reliable and give way better fuel milage. I have raced these cars and built these cars for 36 years now and there is absoloutly no question at all that the stockest of class 11 cars can win the Baja 1000 even today. When it is your day in Baja it is your day. It cost hardly anything to rebuild a running stock Vw motor and you would be blown away by how well a stock Vw motor with a stock cam and stock heavy fly wheel will pull large tires. I would have 0 problem racing a 100 percent stock engine myself as I have won Baja both ways, with a hot engine and a stock engine. The rest of the car is dirt cheap if you get one in decent shape. If that is the case you can use almost everything it came with up front if the parts like ball joints and tie rod ends are good you dont even have to change them. Look for a 69 or later running car, it can be done, to win you must finish. Good luck

Kevin,

If anyone on the site is qualified to answer your question Daveco is definitely the one!! Stock is nice but the latest suspension tech is sure sweet! I think Daveco would agree.

It cost me no more to do my cars suspension the new way verces the old way. If your doing the work yourself the cost is no more done the way I did it. You can find shocks on Race-dezert.com on there classified section as well as other parts for cents on the dollar in a lot of cases

In a way I see Dave's point whole heartedly. You could have a nice car buying used. I'm sure we'll get beaten by lesser cars with less prep and less funding. If I were you I would do a cheap car if that's your budget. Like Dave says, 'if it's your day in Baja, it's your day in Baja'. That rule is true for all classes.

If your motor doesn't make as much power you'll pass the guy that breaks his transmission due to his high hp motor. Experience is KING. Like Dave, Dennis, Jason, Jeremy, Eric, Robert know. You can't trade wheel(steering) time for dollars and cents.

I say, build a cheap car, put your budget into getting racing miles under your belt and know that the experience driving a cheap car is better than taking a long time to build a high dollar ride. It's always better to race than watch!

It needs to be a ball joint front / IRS car. The rules favor the later model car in some ways.
