Dirt is for racing. Asphalt is just for getting there.

Thanks for the link!
Progress is going well, so far. Down to the pan, and lots of cleanup to do. Planning on the rear suspension being together by next week, so we can start on the cage and get the body back on. Foremost, BIG thanks to everyone here for contributing to a great resource of information. Also, the Dingos in particular for having available such invaluable documentation and experiences via their website. A few of us will be going to Primm, so I hope to see everyone there. Also, like many of the eleven racers here, we're supporting a charity organization, called Heeling Autism. Running some of the same races as trophy trucks, these cars are such a great way to promote something like and help out. Be sure to check out the website for more info on that. On another note, after pulling the front beam, we realized its bent on the driver's side. What's the recommendation on this? If a repair is suitable, is it better to press or bend the beam back, or to just cut and weld it straight? |

Finally got around to taking some pictures. I'd welcome comments, input, etc.
A little bit on my background, as well as the intent with the car. I've never raced, built, or worked on an off-road car before, and I can count on one hand the number of off-road races I've been to. Volkswagens, at least before this project, were completely foreign to me. Although, I do have background in racing and race-car building in general, along with formal education in mechanical engineering. I'm not building this car to try and beat Dave. Or some guy named Bob. Or you. I'm building it to finish the 1000. That's it, and that's all. I guess you could say it's on my tick list, right up there with climbing El Cap. But don't get me wrong, we'll be trading paint with all of you at BAP, and any of the other races we can afford to make it to. While I'm at it, I was inspired by other Class 11 teams (Dingos especially) efforts to raise money for a cause while accomplishing their own goals at the same time. I'm hoping to raise money for a charity called Heeling Autism. It's a win-win, really. Lastly, I wanted to build my own car. My own way. This forum is a great database of knowledge, but I really approached the project trying not to copy what others have done in the past. Sure there's no replacement for experience, but if I'm not learning anything, then what's the point, really? Hopefully of everything I've done differently, there's one or two things I might actually improve on. Who knows. |

Gah. Those pictures are small. Since it's way too much work to upload again, larger pics are available here: picasaweb.google.com/fkwhetse/20100808?feat=directlink

Hey There OMG Kenyon,
I think I may have met you at BAP '10. I'm the one with the sivler 1177 car. You've actually built a nice looking car. When it's convenient, give me a call (530)320-1566. Bob Messer |

Incredible Effort, Looks like a N.A.S.C.A.R. shove into a vw. Good job. I want to say with full do respect. The car will not break in half since it has a truss design from fron to back and your body is very protected. If your intent is to finish under the time limit, You are ahead of the others. I am interested in seeing more progress pictures, good job!

Tieing the two shock towers together is a great idea, that is what we did when we raced in Class 9 for the ball joint front beam. I am not the one to determine what is legal or not in class 11. The rules do not say anything, but that is how the rules are in class 11. You can only do what the rules say you can do and the rest needs to stay factory designed for the year the car was manufactured and built.
Dave C will know, Give him time to respond.. :) |
