I am thinking about diving into the class 11 world!!!!!! Can anyone give me advice on the best way to get into a class 11 vehicle for not alot of cash? I am not looking to win a race right now. Just compete!!!!!!!! Also, what are the bare minimum mods I need to do to a stock beetle to compete???

Find a complete car as cheap as you can, running even better. Dozens and dozens of class 11 racers have used stock seats, you can run a stock motor and compete, there are so many ways to pinch pennies while building your car. The big question is how much can you build yourself?? If all it can be much cheaper than you can imagin. You can install a roll cage, turn up the front end, twist the stock bars in the rear, build the most basic car there is to get you into the action and you can finish that way and maybe even win that way. Good luck

cut and turn the front end= 0 dollars if you can do it yourself, more pre load on the back torsion bars= 0 dollars if you decide to use stock Vw

I'm going to start working on a spare car for my Dad just like what Dave is talking about. Should be a cool pre-runner maybe even enter a race. Can't wait to get started.

Also, during the build, don't under estimate the strength of factory VW components. I've wasted a lot of money on wheel studs, wiring, fuel cell and over thinking what I can make stronger. To save money, keep it completely stock with the exception of modifying the suspension to achieve the lift, a decent set of shocks a roll cage and some minor welding up the seams on the pan and beam and you should be race ready. As far as the motor goes, completely stock is OK too. I have a thrown together single port in my super beetle that I drive daily (85 miles) low compression, 91 octane, timing advanced to 37 degrees total advance with no sign of detonation and I am totally amazed on how strong that motor pulls. I threw the very same motor in the 11 for two races and did very well with very respectable lap times. So yeah, build on a budget is very real in class 11. The VW factory already did 97% of the work. Good luck.

Yeah, you could also put 1 stud per drum (to hang the wheel) then factory VW in the other 3 holes. I've always wondered about doing a strength test, a VW lug bolt vs the best aftermarket stud. I'm willing to bet the VW would be stronger.

Only problem is if the vw lugs come lose but if the threads gets screwd on a stud your in the same boat I guess

aallphin,
In my opinion, the cheapest way to get into Class 11 racing (and the fastest) is to buy an existing Class 11 car. If you want to build your own, it can take months, or in some cases (Jason Mace, I'm talking about you), years. Also, if you build your own car, you'll spend a good amount of time tweaking it, to get it right. That's more money and time. If you want to focus on racing, buy an existing Class 11.

I'd be happy to sell you 11newb's car for $581.
Dirt is for racing. Asphalt is just for getting there.
