TOPIC: Got my car
Got my car 1 year, 11 months ago #11983

After a short haiatus I finally bought a car last week... '70, no rust, some bondo, came complete with excellent trans & motor, current tags,$600.
Now the bad: The beam has a welded adjuster, it is straight and has no damage or rust, can it be salvaged? Two wedges were cut out of the pan where the front wheel hard lines meet the rubber lines, the brackets were rotated 90 degrees and welded to the body. I understand that the pan/body are to remain untouched, does that mean that I have to repair the cut-outs? What would be the best way to go about it? The master cylinder was shit and the front cylinders were stuck, I finished this work today. I installed new rubber lines in the front, should I go with steel braided and if so who makes 'em?/where can I get 'em? I have questions: Don't have a clue about what to do next... race motor/trans part collection is complete and assembly should starting in another week or two if time permits. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Something I can start in the next couple of days without having to put the car out of comission? just got back from my first drive, Pomona-wrightwood-Angeles Crest-pomona, and am not ready to give it up to the garage just yet. it's my third time driving a bug and I want eat, sleep and breathe VW as much as I can. |

For now, just drive and enjoy your VW daily (I do). Do you plan on building a race legal 11, or street car? Swap the adjustable beam for a virgin beam (Pomona Swap Meet this weekend). Weld up the wedges on the pan and re-install the brake line brackets to the pan, mounted to the body is a no no. Don't waste your money on steel braided brake line. OEM rubber is the best and only way to go. The stock motor and trans are fine to get you going. Buy a beam, get it cut and twisted and you can swap out the beam, reset your rear torsions and install larger tires all on a saturday and you're only out of commission for a few hours. Good luck.

the pan wedges is no big deal, and Chip is rite, dont waste your money on any other brake lines other than stock. Beam is much better with out adjusters(change). You will never use the adjuster anyway. Chip is the pomona swap meet for Vws?

Smokin deals on parts us 11 guys and street car guys to score on. Sometimes free on some stuff. Towards the end of the swap, most guys don't want to haul the bulky items back home. I've gotten free 4 lug factory wheels, used german drums, sheetmetal galore, hoods, doors, fenders, bumpers. I also buy german 30 pict 1 carbs for about 5 bucks a piece. Definitely worth a look. Also, on March 14, in Irwindale is the Hot VWs drag day with a huge VW swap meet as well not to mention some crazy fast bugs. |
