i dont have any pictures but we have run a couple of different exhaust and then took the advice of dave co and ran the stock exhaust. it seems to be strong and does not hang below the motor.

We are using the Stock Mexican exhaust which is made with the larger diameter tubing and ever so small muffler. It comes with a header system and is reported to add some power but will not take any away. There is an identical EMPI system and that part number is ACC-35067 in www.cip1.com catalog. It too will fit the original body openings.

How does one go about gutting the stock muffler? I think you cut it right down the middle right? Then what? I've never done one.....

I know the muffler will fit better if it's cut in half and then put onto the exhuast studs since the studs are closer together on a race motor. But, I'm just wondering if there's a clean way to do it other than put it in a bandsaw and cut, then reweld. I have no problem doing that, just wondering. Also, I know that most running a stock muffler aren't running any tips but it seems like some kind of tip would help to keep that bumper and rear apron/decklid from getting so hot you can't touch it, any ideas? my initial idea would be to use some thin wall 1.25 tubing or something similar.

I'm getting bored waiting for a good donor vehicle so humor my discussion of this relatively lame topic......

Mike, tips just hate life and cause more damage to the muffler when they get bent and pinched. Just take a torch and cut the baffle out of the 2 tubes for 1 and 3 thats really all you need to do. The hot apron is just that. Mine has bubbled the paint, but never damaged anything. For the muffler to stay conected, I have begun welding the j tubes to the muffler and everything stays great that way.. My dad and I did some dyno time with stock muffler and a header. With the baffles cut out the engine dynoed about the same as with a header. With out those cut out the stock muffler lost 3 hp. I will allways run the stock over a header on a class 11 because you can hit the stock muffler up to the point it does not handg down to get hit where a header is all ready hanging down.

Thanks Dave. I knew you were going to give me the detail I was waiting for. I like the stock exhaust a lot since it's up out of the way, and I think I saw you sleeve a little tubing to permanently connect the j tube to the stock muffler. Thanks much. Ah. Bleeding all your secrets still. hahahahhahaha.

I still need a car if you have any leads on a clean one. I can't find a decent one despite looking for awhile now. They are mostly all junked out missing fenders and bumpers with front or rear apron issues.

I have my king kong ready to go too!
