TOPIC: legal carb ?
legal carb ? 3 years, 5 months ago #7590

The SCORE rule book says that the 30 pict 1 is the only carb. that is legal for class 11 if I'am reading that correctly? Then it goes on to say that an adapter from EMPI is the only legal adapter---my question is what is the adapter for --- is it needed to make the 30 pict 1 fit the dual port intake manifold? where is the best place to buy a new carb? Thanks for any help I can get!

Yes, the dual port manifold center section was designed for a 34mm carb which has a wider base than the 30mm. The offset adapter can be tough to find new. I find them at swap meets for about 5 bucks. There is one on thesamba for 12. If you are running a single port motor then the adapter is not needed. As far as the carb goes, your best bet is a used german round bowl 30 pict. I also find those at swap meets from a couple bucks to 5 bucks. A complete rebuild kit for 6 or 7 bucks and some minor off road mods and you are set. EMPI offers a new carb of the same design (junk). Anything EMPI is junk in my opinion. You can't beat german quality, even on used parts. Good luck on your build.

Better check your rule book, 1 and only 1 adapter is legal for running a 30 pick 1,2,3 or a solex H30-pick replacment carb. The one sold by empi is the ONLY legal adapter allowed when running twin port heads and manifolds, the part number is 98 1293-B. Plain and simple, its the only option, anybody has somthing else on there motor, you better lose it and do it rite or your hard work could be a DQ in the race results.

Yes they are legal, and they run fine with no issues. I have several motors, 3 from FAT with that Carb on them. Just do the typical race prep on it and you should have no problems what so ever, your engine should run smoooooooth

Take the top off of the carb, with a pair of pliers, pull out the brass vent in the throat and tap that hole with a 1/4-20 tap. Then plug it with an allen using loctite on the threads. Drill and tap the top of the body somewhere near the fuel inlet pipe and install a 1/4 inch nipple. This will be the new vent. Also remove the choke plate and if you want, remove the choke shaft, tap and plug the holes. Lower the needle and seat just a tad by placing an extra washer under it. You pretty much have a offroad ready carb other than jetting which will be specific to the engine. Good luck.
