Was wondering if anyone has ever run their car in race ready mode, across a set of scales? Maybe with the exception of a full fuel cell! We recently did with 1107. An wanted to do some comparisons with other cars in the class. Realizing of coarse that the cage being constructed of 4130 chromoly, or 1018/1026 CDS/DOM has little weight difference. Depending on additional tubing placement and size per fabricators discretion. I can't see where this would be a \"racing secret\" as there is no overall weight min or max regulations. Thanks!!!!

By race mode I meant with: spare tire, jack, light bar, tool bag, spare parts, etc. etc. As ready for a point to point race like Baja!

Jeremy and I used the scales they had set-up at BAP Tech to weigh our car. I don't remeber the exact weight but I believe that it was in the 2400lbs range. That was race weight with 11 gallons of gas and all spares we normally carry. Jeremy will have to chime in with the exact weight.

Jason, I still have your spare. Are you by chance going to be at the MORE race next week?

I have an advanced calculator for determining tubing weights on excel. It uses the density of steel and the tubing dimensions to make precise calculations. There's no secret, a good cage on one of these cars weighs around 200 lbs. Everything else is what everyone runs.
Tires are roughly 20 lbs heavier than stock on each (5 total). The rest is stuff like skid plates, tools, spares and anything else you add. The only places I know of to save weight would be in the battery and fuel cell. Now our shocks, well, they will add some weight.... And passengers, my dad and I combined are only tipping the scales around 300 lbs! hahahahahahahahah. One thing to remember, the difference of density between DOM and 4130 is negligable. The reason some 4130 chassis are lighter is because you could use a thinner tubing when using 4130 than what would hold up in a DOM tube. Since the vast majority of a class 11 roll cage is specified to be 1.5 x 0.095, the weight on those pieces is the same. The only place you could save weight is in the optional tubings that aren't specified. I figured it out and the difference was less than 8 lbs and that was using 0.065 wall in non-safety specified sections. For me, that was not worth the additional cost and the fact that on an 11 car you can't readily inspect all of the cage for cracks that are more prevalent in 4130 vs. DOM. People think that a 4130 cage is lighter but it's not, unless you use thinner tubing in certain areas, which on a class 11 are few. That's my 10 cents.... |

What Borrego Boy failed to mention in his post is what we weighed in at - 2140 pounds. We didn't have the jack, tool bag and some other sundries, and I don't know how much fuel we had in it, but you can check it out here:

Not trying to hide or withhold anything. Just forgot to mention it. Here's our car as we weighed it. Wow, in the process of trying to figure out how to post a pic. Ronjon beat me to it.

The shaft and bearing. You are supposed to have a stock steering column. I'm just saying, I wouldn't contest it unless I was beating you and my steering shaft sheared off or something ridiculous like that.....
