I've been reading everything I can find about building a VW Type 1 for a play vehicle. First question. Is there any reason not to use a newer VW? They made Type 1's (not stupor beetles) in Mexico until 2004. Seems like starting with a 12vdc, 10 - 15 year old car should get to the same place as starting with a 30 - 40 year old car?

IRS and a Ball Joint front end are all Type 1 as near as I can tell.

90 - Cat Converter
91 - Disk Brakes in front
91-92+ E.F.I

All have dual port Type 1 engines.

The reason I ask is that I live in Mexico and the newer bugs are cheaper than the older ones and many of the older cars have been restored. I'd hate to take a sawzall to a nice late 60's early 70's resto when I can get a 89-2004 for 50% or less of the cost.

What am I missing?

Cheers,

Randy]]>

This will probably sound crazy but it wouldn’t be the first time. This started when my son and I watched a show about the Baja 500 and decided to look into desert racing. Clearly we need to start small and see how it goes but maybe it will work out sometime in the future, who knows? We don’t have any expectations about being competitive but just what to have some father and son fun. Cass 11 looks great and we think it is the probably the best place to get started. So far so good. Now for the crazy part, we live in Florida and could make it out west a maybe 4-5 times a year. The ideal situation for us would be to buy a midlevel race ready car and have someone in Ca keep it for us and bring it to and from events. Obviously we would need pit support and a bunch of other stuff I don’t even know about. Is there anyone who might want to discuss this in more detail? Cant wait to read your comments!

Thanks

Mark

DaveCo and Dennis have been around long enough to remember when Class 11 was a street car converted to racing use by making more subtle changes.

I am trying to build up a street driven, daily driver type of car as my 'Friday' driver!

I'm calling on guys who have hordes of VW parts laying around from a full-race car build.....I need your parts to complete my shell of a car! I need the following:

All Glass
Steering column (as complete as possible)
Speedo
Glovebox
Ashtray
Dash knobs and cables
Rear Seat
Stock tank for a '71 (fuel filler door on passenger side)
Vent parts
Wiper parts
Old style oil cooler (to mount above rear window)
Bilstein or Fox shocks without reservoirs (rear stock 5" stroke)

Here's the carrot..... I will be building this car and documenting it on this site.

I will do a beam build, rear arms, rear stops, cage, seat mounts, and all the other countless mods we do to our race car as applicable.

My aim is to have a really nice, full interior, street driver with a low compression race legal motor and trans. Think 80's style Class 11!

Who wants to help a brother out? I'm thinking Beige.......]]>

I've been interested in class 11 for awhile and am looking to finally take my first steps in achieving my goals of racing it. My first steps are coming here and buging you guys/gals with info requests and learning what I can.
I plan on doing the majority of the building myself (I'm an ASE Master Tech and love wrench turning, plus not exactly rich enough to hire others to do it haha).
Anyways, this is a great forum from what I've seen. Be warned though, I do have a wicked sense of humor :-).
Hope to learn from you all.]]>

Rear shock length is not limited.

The reason I am going to propose this change is two-fold.
1. The loophole in the current rule has been fully exploited to the point of no return.
Everyone has figured out how to use whatever length shock they want and still manage to keep it 18 inches eye to eye.
2. Shock manufacturers are exploiting the rule with simple 2.0 smooth body shocks turned into a fancy shock that they charge double for.

What are the repurcussions of the rule change? I believe that it will have no effect on the current playing field of rear shocks. Only that it will present more opportunity for mounting the shocks. I think the same length shocks will continue to be used. Based on seeing current setups we are limited in the location by a few things, our cages generally restrict where you can put the shock inside the car and on the trailing arm (only speaking to IRS here) we have to worry about the tire hitting the shock the further out from center it is placed.

Lets here it.]]>

Dave Meek was spanking everyone all weekend long with Petfinder second and us moseying along in third place for most of the weekend. Meek hit a spate of bad luck (and a patch of mud) on the third moto, rolling his car. We took second place on the third moto and thanks to some sort of advanced math that's beyond my pay grade, it gave us second place for the weekend.

We also hit a turkey.
